Shaping the public realm for one of the world’s most iconic stadiums.

Designed to support up to 71,000 spectators, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a world-class venue capable of hosting the most significant global sports and entertainment events. As a catalyst for the transformation of downtown Atlanta, HGOR played a pivotal role in shaping the stadium’s public realm by designing functional exterior spaces that support the massive stadium crowds while creating meaningful connections to surrounding neighborhoods. Through a combination of walkability, infrastructure, and sustainability-driven design, the project extends the stadium experience beyond the building and establishes a resilient, high-performing urban environment for millions of annual visitors.

Infrastructure That Performs at Scale

The project integrates a comprehensive stormwater management system designed not only to perform for the site itself, but also to manage runoff in the surrounding neighborhood communities. The system includes bioswales, a 680,000-gallon cistern, and a 1.1 million-gallon underground vault, contributing to a total capacity of 2.1 million gallons. This infrastructure captures and manages stormwater runoff, reducing flood risk in surrounding neighborhoods while supporting long-term environmental resilience.

Sustainability as a Core Design Driver

HGOR’s design played a key role in achieving LEED Platinum certification through stormwater management design that enables the use of recycled water where appropriate, reduces demand on municipal systems, and enhances overall site performance. The project also became the first professional sports stadium to achieve TRUE Platinum certification, reflecting a commitment to waste reduction and sustainable operations at a global scale.

Connecting the Stadium to the Community

HGOR’s design strengthens connections between the stadium, adjacent urban areas, and surrounding neighborhoods, transforming the site into an integrated part of downtown Atlanta rather than a standalone venue. Enhanced walkability and thoughtfully designed public spaces support safe and intuitive movement for more than 11 million annual visitors, while helping to drive year-round economic activity.

A Catalyst for Downtown Transformation

Beyond the stadium itself, the project contributes to Atlanta’s emergence as a premier destination for tourism and major events. By improving connectivity, enhancing the public realm, and embedding sustainable infrastructure, HGOR’s work supports the long-term viability of both the stadium and the surrounding urban district.
