Balancing recreation and conservation around a sensitive reservoir landscape.
When the City of Canton sought to evaluate recreational opportunities around a 411-acre water impoundment, HGOR was engaged to study and assess the 150-foot buffer surrounding the reservoir. What began as a feasibility effort quickly revealed an ecologically rich and highly sensitive landscape, where mountain and piedmont ecosystems converge to create a rare diversity of plant life and habitat. HGOR’s approach focused on balancing access with preservation—developing a framework that allows the public to experience the site’s unique natural features while protecting its long-term ecological integrity. Through careful analysis and strategic planning, the project establishes a vision for recreation, education, and conservation to coexist within a truly exceptional environment.
Discovering a Rare Ecological Convergence
Initial site analysis revealed an unusually diverse landscape shaped by the intersection of two ecoregions. Mature forest canopy, layered understory, and the presence of unique and threatened species positioned the site as an ideal setting for environmental education. Additional features—including pristine streams, quartz outcrops, a multi-tiered beaver dam, and expansive reservoir views—further reinforced the site’s ecological and experiential value.
Designing Access Without Compromise
HGOR recognized that any recreational framework would need to carefully balance public access with environmental sensitivity. A connected trail system was proposed to guide visitors through the landscape, with alignments carefully selected to minimize impact while providing access to a range of habitats and viewpoints. Boardwalks and elevated structures were recommended in sensitive areas, including wetlands and steep terrain, allowing users to experience the landscape without disturbing it.

A Framework for
Exploration and Education
The plan introduces a range of low-impact recreational and educational opportunities designed to deepen engagement with the site. Botanically rich areas were identified for interpretive signage, while features such as coves, overlooks, and forest clearings provide moments for discovery and reflection. Additional elements—including docks, observation towers, and immersive overnight accommodations such as yurts—offer varied ways to experience the landscape while maintaining its ecological character.
Shaping a Destination
Rooted in Stewardship
Rather than imposing a singular program, the plan establishes a flexible framework that allows the site to evolve as a destination for recreation, education, and conservation. By prioritizing stewardship and thoughtful intervention, HGOR’s vision ensures that the reservoir buffer can be experienced by the community without compromising the qualities that make it exceptional.
